One time, I was alone at home when I was 8. My mom was gone but said somebody was coming by the house to tune our piano. So the doorbell rang an hour later, and it was the piano tuner. He was blind, and I had to lead him by hand to the piano. He worked on it a bit, and then he wanted lunch. I made him some Campbell's tomato soup. When it was ready, I led him to the kitchen table with the soup waiting. I was scared but brave. He lapped the soup up like a thirsty dog at some hot railroad tracks in Texas, like a dog with an extra long tongue lappity lap lap lap. And then he finished– finished the soup, so led him back to the piano, and he tuned that piano like a mother!! After that, I don’t know what happened to him, but I got this brand new box of Ritz crackers from the cupboard, went to the TV room and started watching an old black and white movie. I sat there watching the movie and eating the crackers one by one. I kept watching the movie and eating the crackers. I watched the whole thing and ate the whole box of crackers. That was about two hours. Then I went outside on my front lawn, sat on the curb, and wondered if I would get sick from eating all the crackers. I also wondered where the blind piano tuner went. I thought about calling his name because maybe he fell asleep under a tree, but I didn’t because I didn’t know his name. I didn’t get sick either. It was a Saturday, and I think I was wearing corduroys.
